Delayed cord clamping, more accurately called optimal cord clamping, should now be considered the standard of care for newborns. Rather than cutting the umbilical cord immediately after birth, optimal cord clamping involves waiting at least 30 to 60 seconds, or until the cord stops pulsing, before clamping and cutting.

This small delay allows a significant amount of extra blood from the placenta—rich in iron, stem cells, and oxygen—to flow into the baby, supporting healthier blood volume, better iron stores, and improved circulation. These benefits can reduce the risk of anemia in infancy and may even support better long-term development.

The term optimal is more accurate because it highlights that this timing is not random—it's physiologically best for most newborns unless there’s a medical emergency. As more evidence has emerged, professional guidelines from major health organizations around the world now strongly recommend making optimal cord clamping routine practice.
