Radioactivity is a physical process of spontaneous transformations of atomic nuclei. The original nucleus is called the mother or parent nucleus. The corresponding radionuclide is also called the mother (parent). The nucleus formed as a result of radioactive transformation is called the daughter nucleus, or the descendant nucleus. The resulting radionuclide has a similar name. The mother and daughter nuclei, as well as the radionuclides consisting of them, are called genetically related. If the daughter nucleus turns out to be radioactive, then we speak of chains of radioactive transformations, or radioactive series (families). All elements in radioactive series are also called genetically related.
