The September 11, 2001 attacks (9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide terrorist attacks carried out that day in the United States by members of the Al-Qaeda jihadist network. They hijacked passenger airliners and crashed them into several targets, killing approximately 3,000 people and injuring another 6,000. The attacks also resulted in the destruction of the World Trade Center complex in New York City and severe damage to the Pentagon in Virginia. The attacks were carried out by 19 members of the Al-Qaeda jihadist network, divided into four groups of hijackers, each with a pilot who would take control of the aircraft after subduing the cockpit crew. American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 were the first to be hijacked, and both were crashed into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center, the first into the North Tower and the second shortly afterward into the South Tower, causing both skyscrapers to collapse within the next two hours. The third hijacked plane was American Airlines Flight 77, which was used to crash into the Pentagon in Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, did not reach its intended target, crashing in an open field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after the passengers and crew fought back against the terrorists and lost control of the cockpit. The attacks injured more than 6,000 people, killed 2,973, and left 24 missing. All 19 terrorists were also killed. The attacks, which were immediately condemned as horrific acts of terrorism by the United Nations Security Council, were characterized by the use of commercial airliners as weapons, provoking widespread fear around the world, particularly in Western countries, and fundamentally altering international aviation security policies.
