Obsolescence planning is essentially planning for when your hardware is going to need to be replaced.

The best way to do this is to figure out where you want your IT environment to be in the next few years. Keep in mind that things go better if you have all of the same computers, for instance, than if you just grab whatever is on sale or whatever a person asks for.

Now that you know what your "perfect future IT environment" would look like, determine when your computers will need to be replaced. For most business computers this will be every 5 years or so. If your computer and software needs are minimal and your industry doesn't seem to be advancing much, maybe you can extend that, and vice versa.

Now, determine the ages of all of your current computers and map that against dates that are 5 years or however long out.

Not only can you now figure out your budget and the perfect way to get to your ultimate future IT space, but you're ensuring you get the most out of your current hardware. And, you can even find where there are clusters of time where computers are likely to need replacement and knock those all out at once.

Do you do this? Do you have a better way to handle IT obsolescence planning? Let me know in the comments.
