Welcome to LinkedInMan!
Today’s tip: How do you make a Custom LinkedIn®URL?
Do you know what your LinkedIn®URL is?
• You can find it on your profile page; either right below your picture, or in your Contact Info. And it looks like this:
Here’s how to find it:
• Right below your picture
or –
• Click the Contact Info tab, then it’s right next to “LinkedIn”
Which looks better?
• Which would you rather represent you,
or which would you rather try to remember?
o Don Henninger with all those random letters and numbers at the end?
o Or Elizabeth Henry’s, which is nice, neat, and tidy?
How do you change yours to a nice, neat, Custom LinkedIn®URL?
• Let’s take a tour on a computer, and I will show you how . . .
1. First, go up to the menu bar and click [Profile]
2. Up comes your profile. It is already in edit mode
3. Find your LinkedIn®URL right below your picture
4. Let’s get rid of this ugly box!
5. And see that little spokey gear thingy at the end of your URL, click that!
6. This moves you to your ‘Profile’ page
7. Look on the right for the “Create your custom URL” hyperlink, and CLICK IT!
8. Now you see a dialog box where you can add your name to the end of the URL. Type in your name – all one word

9. Click [Save]
10. Now this name, if you can believe it, has already been taken. If you have a common name, you WILL run into this. No worries!
11. Try a variation of your name – again, ALL ONE WORD! . . . S h i v e r M T i m b e r s
12. Click [Save]
13. It Worked! You may need to try several variations – just keep trying.
14. Head back up to the Menu Bar, and click [Profile] again.
15. Let me get rid of the pesky box again . . .
16. And there it is! Your brand new, nice, neat, and tidy Custom LinkedIn®URL! You DID IT!!!
What should you use for your Custom LinkedIn®URL?
• YOUR NAME! As close to your First and Last Name as you can get! Start with just that.
• If that is taken, try using your Middle Initial
• If THAT doesn’t work, try your Last Name then First Name
• . . . maybe with your Middle Initial . . .
• If THAT doesn’t work, try using your Middle Name
• . . . or just First and Middle Initial . . .
• If THAT doesn’t work, find some other variation which ONLY uses your name
Here’s the simple rules to follow to get the BEST Custom LinkedIn®URL . . .
• Do ALL you can to avoid using numbers!
• Remember, NO SPACES ALLOWED!
So what’s the big deal?
• Why is changing your LinkedIn®URL so important? How is that supposed to help you?
• Anyone in the world who has internet access and a browser can type in your LinkedIn®URL and see your profile – whether they are a LinkedIn®member or not!
And THAT is a Big Deal!!
So how would you use it? Where would you publish your nice new Custom LinkedIn®URL?
• ABSOLUTELY on your resume!
• Add it to the Signature File for your email (You DO have a special email account JUST for Job Search, right?) so it shows at the bottom of EVERY professional email you send!
And
Add it to your Business Card and Networking Card!
So that’s how you do it!
• That’s how you create a Custom LinkedIn®URL
• That’s how you use your Custom LinkedIn®URL
