Why I Still Return to the Same Places for Nature Photography
Most of the time we believe better photographs are somewhere else. This film was made to test that assumption. It was one of my first trips out after Christmas, returning once again to a woodland I have photographed for years. At this point in winter the place looks stark and stripped back. The leaves are gone, the branches are bare and the structure of the woodland is fully exposed. On the surface it is easy to assume there is nothing left to photograph and the conditions did little to help.
Bright winter sunlight in woodland often works against subtle photography, creating harsh contrast and little obvious direction. Many photographers would consider it the wrong light, on the wrong day, in the wrong place. But familiarity changes how you see. Because I know this woodland so well, I was able to slow down, work within the limitations and pay attention to what was quietly shifting rather than what was missing. What appeared repetitive at first began to unfold, producing photographs in abundance and, potentially, one of those rare images that only reveals itself once a year.
This film is not about finding somewhere new. It is about returning, observing and recognising how places change slowly over time. And how, if you stay long enough, they continue to offer more than you expect.
