Introduction to grammar-translation method. It is probably the oldest method for teaching a foreign language. It comes from the classical (aka traditional) method of teaching ancient languages. In the classes, students learn grammatical rules and then apply those rules by translating sentences between the target language and the native language. The approach has two main goals: to enable students to read and translate literature written in the source language, and to learn the language more as a subject than a means of communication.
