Things to Remember:
Essentially, a scam pop up is a window that is displayed as a result of clicking on a link, mistyping a web address, or adware installed on the computer. One way to protect yourself against this type of scam is to have an ad blocker installed and enabled. I have included a link in the things to remember section to install the PC Matic ad blocker.
If a fake virus alert gets through your ad blocker, or you don’t have one enabled or installed, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc at the same time and bring up the Task Manager. Find the affected web browser in the Task Manager and click force close.
If you still see the alert when you reopen the browser, you will need to clear the cache and cookies.
The cache is your computer's short-term memory, where information is stored for easy retrieval.
Cookies are messages that web servers pass to your web browser when you visit internet sites. These files typically contain information about your visit to the web page, as well as any information you've volunteered, such as your name and interests. You can clear your cache, cookies and browser history by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Delete at the same time, while in your internet browser. When the window pops up, select the boxes next to cookies and cached data, then click "clear data."
