Debugging Render Boss (and finding some deep After Effects bugs)

Last week I was working on some VFX for a music video. While rendering via Render Boss, I discovered a weird bug.
It was a particularly sneaky bug, so I spent the next 5 days figuring it out. I shot quick updates as I went along and put them together here.
Hopefully it'll give a bit of insight into how that process works.
