Talking a live network with lost markings is quite difficult without a high-quality generator – the signal doesn't reach, and some generators are downright dangerous for network equipment. The simplest way to test a network without a high-quality tester is to plug or unplug connectors from the computers' network cards one by one and monitor the indicators on the switch. I tried to automate the process a bit. Some expensive testers costing a couple thousand euros use a similar method; mine costs about $5.
