A subset is a section of a larger downloaded image. Since satellite data downloads usually cover more area than you are interested in and near 1 GB in size, you can select a portion of the larger image to work with. for example, A typical Landsat scene covers an area of about 185km by 185km. At times, it makes sense to cut out a subset of this larger image to simplify analysis and focus on the portion of the scene that is of primary interest.
