Aurora Inferno The Planet That Burns Without a Sun

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope  has revealed stunning details about SIMP-0136, a rogue planet roughly 20 light-years from Earth that’s being heated not by a star, but by its own intense auroras. SIMP-0136 experiences thermal inversion, its upper atmosphere is hotter than its surface, due to auroral activity. With temperatures exceeding 1,500°C, it’s far hotter than Jupiter or Saturn.

The planet spins every 2.4 hours, allowing researchers to observe dynamic atmospheric chang. Its atmosphere is blanketed by global cloud cover made of silicate grains (like beach sand), not water or ice.  Subtle temperature shifts suggest rotating storms similar to Jupiter’s Great Red Spot. This marks one of the most precise atmospheric measurements of any extrasolar object to date, offering new insights into how rogue planets form and evolve without a host star.
