The OFFSET command in AutoCAD is one of the most essential tools for creating parallel lines, concentric circles, and parallel curves at a specific distance from an original object.
Here is a quick guide on how to use it effectively:
Basic Steps to Offset
Start the Command: Type OFFSET (or the shortcut O) and press Enter.
Specify Distance: Type the numerical distance you want for the offset and press Enter.
Select Object: Click on the object (line, circle, polyline, etc.) you want to copy.
Pick Direction: Click on the side of the object where you want the new copy to appear.
Finish: Press Esc or Enter to exit the command.
Key Options & Tips
Through: Instead of typing a distance, you can select the Through option (type T) to pick a specific point that the offset object must pass through.
Multiple: After selecting your object, choose the Multiple option (type M) to create several offsets of the same object without having to re-select it each time.
Erase: You can set the command to automatically delete the source object after offsetting (type E for Erase).
Layer: You can choose whether the new object is created on the current layer or the source object's layer.
