Pompeii awoke as a typical Roman city. People bought bread, argued in the market, went to the baths, opened shops, and looked at Vesuvius as if it were an ordinary mountain.

A few hours later, rocks and ash began to fall from the sky. The streets disappeared under pumice. Roofs began to collapse. Some people ran to the gates, others returned home to collect their children, the elderly, money, and belongings. Many thought the stone walls would protect them.

They were mistaken.

In this episode, we examine Pompeii's final hours: how the city lived before the catastrophe, why people didn't understand the warnings, who managed to escape and who stayed, how Vesuvius worked, what a pyroclastic flow is, and why the famous "bodies of Pompeii" are not actually petrified people, but plaster casts of voids in the ash.

We'll also talk about DNA research, which has shown that some touching stories about Pompeii's victims may have been invented after the excavations.

This isn't just a story about a volcano. It's a story about a city that, until the very last moment, believed that tomorrow would come.
