Habitat modification, pollution and invasive alien fishes are among the greatest threats to South Africa’s freshwater biodiversity. A long term monitoring project to assess the ecosystem responses to these pressures has been initiated in South Africa by the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB). The project is funded by the Water Research Commission (WRC K5-2538) provides opportunities to Post-Graduate students from South African Universities to participate in aquatic monitoring of fish, invertebrates and plants.
