OFF-SEASON IN SRI LANKA 🇱🇰 IS IT WORTH GOING? | Arugam Bay
There's a common myth among tourists, especially Russians, that Sri Lanka, or more specifically its southern part, is only worth visiting during the high season—from November to April. Summer is supposedly a no-go period, with bad weather and endless rain.
In reality, the situation is quite different. On the southwestern and southern coasts of Sri Lanka, the year is truly divided into high and low seasons. What's the difference?
The high season, from mid-November to April, means you'll see a generally calm ocean, sometimes completely wave-free. The weather is mostly cloudless, with short, infrequent rainfall. Air temperatures range from 30-33°C (86-93°F). Ocean water temperatures are 29°C (82°F).
In May and June, the seasons begin to change, and the rainy season begins. This means the ocean becomes more choppy, with large waves appearing, often flooding and inundating much of the beach.
Frequent tropical downpours, mostly at night, last for two weeks to a month. Both the air and ocean temperatures drop by several degrees. The air temperature reaches 26-27°C and the ocean temperature 25-26°C. All locals rejoice at these rains because the plants will finally get their moisture, and everything will become more lush and green and come alive.
The off-season lasts in summer, from July to August, and sometimes into September. The weather is generally dry, but the ocean is still choppy and often cloudy. The average temperature is 30°C, and the water temperature is 26°C. There are few tourists during this time, although the weather doesn't interfere with your vacation at all. So, if you don't like crowded beaches, the ideal time to visit is July-September.
