Pete goes back to revisit the Pilot episode of Breaking Bad one more time to examine why it’s one of the best ever made. In 58 minutes it tells us everything we need to know about Walter White and is extremely effective at making us root for him. This is a great setup for Vince Gilligan’s larger plan to deliver a story about change.
Through a seemingly inconsequential statement from Walter White to his students Gilligan lays out his intentions for the series. When Walt asks his students what chemistry is he says he likes to think of it as the study of change. It's growth, then decay, then transformation and he ends by saying it’s fascinating really. This average and almost forgettable teacher is telling us what’s about to happen in a way that we’ll only be able to understand after it’s well underway.
