Dhanurasana comes from the Sanskrit word "dhanu" - bow. If you look at the body of a person performing the final version of this asana, it really resembles the shape of a bow, where the hands pull the legs, torso and head up like a bow.

"Holding the big toes with your hands, pull them towards the ears, as if bending a bow. This is dhanurasana." ("Hatha Yoga Pradipika", ch. 1, shloka 25)
"Place your feet on the ground firmly, like sticks; grasp the ends of your feet with your hands and bend (backwards), like a bow. This is Dhanurasana." "Gheranda Samhita"
Very often this version of the pose is called urdhva dhanurasana (inverted bow) or ardha chakrasana (half wheel pose).

The bow pose powerfully stimulates the solar plexus area, exerting a pronounced beneficial effect on the digestive, excretory and genitourinary organs, and strengthens the abdominal muscles.

It promotes massage of the liver, pancreas, gall bladder, stomach, and is often used in yoga therapy to treat diabetes and various defects of these organs. It also stimulates the kidneys, adrenal glands, and thyroid gland.

With an open chest, a light massage of the heart and all organs of the chest cavity is performed.

Working with the spine straightens hunched shoulders and back. The bow pose is used to treat certain types of rheumatism.

The positive effect of dhanurasana is also used to optimize the menstrual cycle, having a beneficial effect on the female reproductive organs.

When performing dhanurasana, it is recommended to concentrate attention on three points:

— vishuddha chakra (neck area)
— manipura chakra (abdominal area)
— at the middle point of the back bend
