As a response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the transatlantic partnership has seen a remarkable revival. It is based on shared democratic values and principles, including the responsibility to protect the planet for future generations and workers. The commitment to raise investments in defence, notably France’s push for stronger European autonomy and Germany’s “Zeitenwende”, is testimony to the mind shift in Europe that more collective effort is required to ensure its security beyond relying on NATO and the US. Yet, for both sides of the Atlantic, much is at stake in November’s presidential election in the US. This session will discuss progressive concepts of strengthening the transatlantic partnership, international cooperation and diplomacy in the face of a multipolar world order and an anti-Western bloc by authoritarian states and the outcome of the US election in 2024.
