Kenneth Lane Thompson, winner of the Association for Computing Machinery's A.M. Turing Award, discusses the Multics project to build an ambitious timesharing operating system. Thompson worked on the project as a programmer early in his career at Bell Labs, which was developing the system jointly with MIT and General Electric.
