Looking to build vocal power and unlock your full singing potential? Start with this simple but powerful chest voice exercise.
Say “na na” in your normal speaking voice, then try sustaining it a little bit. Place your hand on your chest—you’ll feel a gentle vibration. That’s the chest voice in action. It's called that because the sound resonates lower in your body, and you can literally feel it. Let’s walk through it: stay in that strong, speaking voice range and sing along, starting in a comfortable pitch.
This mode is perfect for beginners learning how to sing with control and volume. Your chest voice is naturally robust because the vocal folds are shorter and thicker in this register. But as you go higher, you’ll notice that strong chest voice starts to fade out. That’s where the head voice comes in. Make a light siren sound—hear that? It’s a thinner, breathier tone, often used for higher notes. It might feel a little floaty or even silly at first, but it's an essential tool for singing those high notes without straining.
Try saying “wee” or “woo” in a playful way to explore your head voice. Then, mix things up: alternate between a “na” (for chest voice) and an “oo” (for head voice) to feel the difference. Once you're familiar with both, you can begin blending them—this is what singers often call “mix voice,” and it helps you move smoothly between registers.
