FaceBook Boosted Posts vs Ads | Which Should You Use?

If you have a facebook business page, you have most likely seen the blue "boost" button next to your posts. At first glance, you may just assume that this is the same thing as running a Facebook ad and throw a few bucks at it. I had the same thought when I first started using Facebook for business years ago - I just assumed that running a boosted post was just a shortcut (or streamlined way) to promote my page and product.

However, I have since learned through experience that running a boosted post is essentially a waste of money. Facebook is a really smart platform and they know how their users react when seeing an ad. Essentially, if you boost a post, you are telling Facebook that you want a bunch of likes on a post (which is pointless), so Facebook sends the content to people who have a history of liking.

The problem with this is that if you are trying to convert, you won't reach the right audience. If you run a Facebook ad, however, you can target a more specific audience that is more likely to convert, as opposed to just liking a photo.

Important Note: The only time that I have seen use for boosting a post was when promoting something to my already established followers. i.e: if I was running a sale that I wanted my followers to see because you can select "only show to followers" when adjusting the settings of a boosted post. This is a cheap way to make sure your message reaches your followers. If you are trying to reach an audience of not your followers, you're better off just running a Facebook ad as opposed to a boost.
