🟣 Original title: Sociopath: A Memoir
🟣 Translation: Beatriz Medina
🟣 Publisher: HarperCollins Brazil
🟣 Publisher's synopsis:
A fascinating and revealing memoir about the difficulties of understanding one's own sociopathy and the search for clarification regarding her mental disorder, often misunderstood and described as malignant.

Patric Gagne discovered that she made people uncomfortable even before entering kindergarten. I suspected this was because she didn't feel the same things as the other children. Emotions like fear, guilt, and empathy were absent in her. Most of the time, she felt nothing. And she didn't like how "nothing" made her feel.

Patric did her best to pretend she was like everyone else, but the constant pressure to conform to the standards imposed by a society that rejected anyone like her was unbearable. So Patric stole. She lied. She was violent. She became an expert at picking locks and breaking into houses. Always with the goal of filling the "nothing" with… something.

In a college psychology class, Patric finally discovered why she was different from others: she was a sociopath. However, even though it was identified more than a century ago, sociopathy is often neglected by many mental health professionals. They told her there was no treatment, no hope for a normal life. Pop culture sociopaths – crazy men and evil villains considered monsters – haunted her. Her future didn't seem to hold anything good for her.

However, by reconnecting with an old flame, Patric glimpses a future beyond her diagnosis. If she is capable of love, perhaps she is not a monster. Along with her love (and some peculiar characters she meets along the way), she embarks on a mission to prove that the millions of Americans who share her diagnosis are not monsters either.

Sociopath is the ironic, courageous, and inspiring story of Patric's journey to change her destiny and build a life full of love and hope.
