The S61 is no exception to the rule when it comes to the quality that NI has become associated with. There is some tight keyboard action that in and of itself makes this a worthwhile investment.
NI has done an exceptional job of engineering the NI keyboards.
There is no doubt that audio recording can be enhanced when you have the right tools. NI Komplete Kontrol S61 may just be that right technology.
What You Need To Know.
The first thing that you will figure out about the S61 is that it does not depend on a USB for power it has its own power supply which is included. The setup comes complete with adapters for Europe, Asia and the US.
You will also notice that it is absent an audio face that is built in which of course means you cannot use it live. It really is built for the music studio and is a pro audio setup. It cannot do the double duty that some other controllers can.

This demo and everything about the S61 is made possible thanks to the outstanding Komplete Kontrol software. The 8 endless rotary encoders allows for easy mapping.
While the idea of automatic mapping isn’t that fresh it still brings the game changer you want to your studio capabilities. It is a time saver.
The sound development engineers put the work in and it shows. The features include a MIDI processing engine that offers double duty as both a chord and scale generator. There is a arpeggiator that is full-featured. The features are inspiring.
Right above the keyboard is a range of LED lights that give you feedback that is easy to see. They indicate a series of information including which notes are selected, where the drums are assigned, which key switching and more.
You can switch off the light series if you do not find it helpful. I did. I liked having a visual indicator to keep me focused and keep me on point.
There is a lot that this MIDI has to offer. Like all controllers there is a bit of a learning curve when it comes to getting the most out of it, but this controller is intuitive and shortens the learning curve a great deal.
Some Considerations.
There are a few kinks that need to be worked out with the S6 that Native Instruments should be paying attention. There are some issues with 3rd party software.
Perhaps NI will sort the issue out with updates down the road. There were a few other bumps in the road to get started but once they were overcome it was smooth sailing and impressive results.
Don’t let the problems with 3rd party synth software scare you away. Overall this is a must have MIDI if you are a Native Instruments fan.
If you are not a big fan of NI to begin with, it may be a hard sell for you but ultimately it is worth the investment.
