Here's an interesting set of PAMS Series 27 jingles for Detroit station WXYZ 1270 AM. You'll notice a LOT of variations in lyrics and even in a couple of cases, instrumentation. I always heard these as a sort of "wild card" set of jingles not just because of all the different lyrics, but also because some of these were sung with a mixed group of male and female voices- not the way PAMS originally intended for these jingles to be sung.
I'm not a fan of the cuts featuring the mixed group; the jingles lose the power and impact of the four-voice male group. But WXYZ's PD must have made the request, maybe as a way to differentiate the station's version of Series 27 from that of other stations.
I believe Series 27 was the last of PAMS Numbered-Series packages bought by WXYZ. Sometime around 1966, WXYZ's PD, Lee Alan...
".. had written, composed and produced the music for the new ‘Personality-Plus’ jingles package for the station’s new sound for 1966. The new jingles custom were produced in Chicago by Dick Marx Productions for Lee Alan and were beautifully sung for WXYZ by the famous Anita Kerr Singers."
There was a fierce battle for ratings and the Top 40 audience in Detroit: WXYZ, CKLW and WKNR were all duking it out for market dominance. In the end, WXYZ lost to both CKLW and WKNR. By March of 1967, WXYZ exited the Top 40 race and changed its format to what the new station operations manager Joe Bacarella titled "The Sound Of The Good Life." The war still raged on between WKNR and CKLW. It was all over in 1972: WKNR bowed out of the Top 40 format, conceding to "The Big 8," CKLW.
