Create a Procedural Staircase Digital Asset in Houdini (HDA Tutorial)

In this tutorial, we convert our procedural staircase geometry into a fully reusable Houdini Digital Asset (HDA). You’ll learn how to organize a complex node network by packing everything into a subnet and exposing only the most important parameters for easy control.

We start by cleaning up the parameter interface, hiding unnecessary inputs, and promoting key controls such as height, radius, number of steps, turns, step width, step depth, railing offset, and scale. Each parameter is renamed and organized so the asset feels intuitive and production-ready. This makes the staircase easy to adjust without diving back into the node graph.

Next, we create a new digital asset from the subnet, set the operator name and label, define input behavior, and assign a custom icon. You’ll also learn how to properly save the asset to a library and install it either locally or globally so it’s available across projects and machines.

This workflow is ideal for procedural modeling, environment art, and technical artists who want to build flexible tools instead of one-off models. By the end of this video, you’ll have a clean, adjustable procedural staircase asset ready for use in games, films, or real-time engines.
