15 Year Old Sakia Gunn Murdered For Being Gay. | A Hate Crime And The Murderer Only Got 20 Years.
On May 11, 2003 Sakia and her friends had traveled from their hometown of Newark, New Jersey to Greenwich Village , Manhattan . It was a popular spot for Lesbian, Gay and Transgendered youth and that’s where they would spend their weekend nights where they felt safe and part of a community.
After their evening they walked to the bus stop and waited. A large police booth stood at the corner. It was empty.
A white station wagon with two men in it pulled up to the curb. At first the two men were flirting and catcalling at the girls and then propositioning them into some sexual interaction
Sakia ended up responding that they were lesbians and weren’t interested. That’s when The men began spaying homophobic insults and words were exchanged. One of the men, Richard McCullough got out of the car and attacked the girls, holding one of them in a choke-hold. Sakia and one of her friends Valencia started fighting Richard . Sakia didn’t back down and hit him pretty hard, that’s when he ended up stabbing her in the chest.
This dude than ran back to the car and it sped away.
The girls raced to a car that had stopped at a red light and asked the driver to take them to the hospital. He did. Sakia ended up dying in her friend Valencia’s arms in the emergency room.
Sakia Gunn was only 15years old.
