Dog Sledding in Finland
There are few activities that can compare with the beauty and the excitement of dog sledding, and there are few places that you can go around the world that have the climate and the terrain in which to enjoy it. Finland is one of the magical places, and I have to say that it was one of the most amazing experiences that I have ever been able to enjoy, and within minutes I felt the kind of relaxation and enjoyment that make me want to return sooner rather than later. There is something about zipping through the snowy scenery of a Finnish forest that is hard to match anywhere else.
I should also warn you that at the start of the video there are some really cute shots of the dogs frolicking in the snow, and showing the kind of enthusiasm for their work that I sometimes wish I could have on a cold morning. Once they were harnessed to the sled they couldn't wait to start, and it certainly seemed as though they were having about as much fun as I was as we wound our way through the forest. The dog handlers were also really friendly and knowledgeable, and while I loved our experience for a few hours, it made me think about what a longer expedition of this kind would be like.
However, there is one thing that I should warn you about dog sledding, and it is something that is almost inevitable when you have a large group of outdoor dogs following each other through the forest, and that is the smell. The fragrance of around fifty dogs certainly tends to catch you, particularly if you're riding towards the back of the group, but for me this is just a small hurdle compared to the wonderful experience. I was also able to go snowmobiling for the first time while I was in Finland, but for me it was the experience of enjoying the scenery and the enthusiasm of the dogs that made this such a great day.
