Just Hangin’ by artist Felandus Thames captures a spider web of shoe laces affixed to the wall complemented by a single pair of sneakers suspended from below. The work is an allusion to the sneakers one would see hanging in African-American neighborhoods throughout the country - something that is often erroneously connected to drug trafficking activity. The work also heavily alludes to the heinous history of lynching in the American South and continued violence against Black communities in America to this day.
The Dirty South: Contemporary Art, Visual Culture and the Sonic Impulse is organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
