This digitalized video shows some of the old and new “Udupi Hotels” in Madras, i.e. Udupi Sri Krishna Vilas, New Woodlands Hotel, Woodlands Drive Inn, Hotel Dasaprakash, and Hotel Dasa. The film features conversations with, among others, historian and journalist S. Muthiah.
The video was made as part of a project about religious “mass feeding” and the so-called “Udupi hotels”, which emerged in South India about one hundred years ago. For this context, see Stig Toft Madsen and Geoffrey Gardella, ”Udupi Hotels: Entrepreneurship, Reform and Revival”, pp. 91-109 in Krishnendu Ray and Tulasi Srinivas (eds.) Curried Cultures, Globalization, Food, and South Asia, University of California Press, 2012, or the Indian edition of this book. The film was made in 1991. Realisation: Stig Toft Madsen. Camera: Roy & Suresh. Edited at Reflections, Bangalore.
Two more films from this project are available on YouTube: “A Holy Meal” and “Coffee&Tiffin”.
