Martin Ødegaard was everywhere against Ivory Coast at the FIFA World Cup 2026™ - but his biggest impact came before he even received the ball.

In this tactical analysis, FIFA Technical Study Group expert Pablo Zabaleta explains how Ødegaard's movement, positioning and decision-making constantly created problems for Ivory Coast's midfield. By drifting into different spaces, dropping deep to support the build-up and patiently controlling the tempo, the Norway captain manipulated defenders and opened passing lanes for his teammates.

Zabaleta also highlights Ødegaard's intelligence without the ball. His counter-pressing, relentless work rate and ability to recognise exactly when to accelerate attacks made him one of Norway's most influential players throughout the match.
