Before you think about which surfboard is right for you, you need to understand the basic types of boards. Then, it will be easier to choose the right one. There are a huge variety of boards, and in this video, we've highlighted only the main types that every surfer should know.
As a rule, all surfers start with a soft-top board and then gradually downsize. The basic advice we give to all our students is to start with a soft-top board, gradually downsize to a mid-size board (around 7.0-7.6 feet), and then decide which riding style suits you best, and whether you want to downsize to a shortboard or return to a longboard.
In the video, we didn't discuss the required board sizes to be classified into any of the categories mentioned, as size is just one of many board characteristics and shouldn't be relied upon solely.
But for a basic guide:
Softboard - 8ft to 11ft
Longboard - 9ft to 11ft (longer versions available)
Midlands/Funboard - 6ft to 8ft
Shortboard - 5ft to 7ft
Fishboard - 5ft to 6.6ft
This is an introductory article about boards. If you're interested in this topic, we've prepared a full guide with all the details on how to find "your" board and choose it correctly. So we'd love to hear your comments so we can see if this question is relevant to you :)
