My name is Carmen from Studio Carmen de Veer and I give you tips on designing prints and decorative motifs. Sometimes it takes practice and explanation to know how to do something. These videos will help you with that. What techniques can you use? How do you design stylized shapes? How do you create graphic prints? As a Print and Pattern designer, I use these tips as well. Textiles have always been my base, so I will definitely tell you more about screen printing, dyeing and stenciling designs on fabric. The technique used is screen printing or stenciling. In addition to water-based inks, I also work with natural dyes. These I get partly from the dye plants from the vegetable garden which I am very enthusiastic about. Woad is an important plant in this. Nature is an inexhaustible source of inspiration for me. Both for shapes, colors and for dyes to screen print with.

Printing textiles in an easy way, without exposing a screen printing frame. Should I use a stencil made of paper or one made of plastic?
A stencil made of paper is easier to cut. You poke a hole in it with your scissors and then cut out the shape.
A stencil made of plastic can be used more often. Plastic is waterproof and therefore easy to clean.
In this video I tell you what the best choice is.
I am Carmen from Studio Carmen de Veer and design prints and decorative motifs. With my designs on textile and paper I want to give you a SLOW DOWN AND ENJOY moment.
The ideal thing about paper is that you probably have it somewhere in your house. Easy to come by. And cheap too.
The advantage of working with a stencil made of plastic is that the shape stays good, no matter how often you clean it. There will be no spontaneous crack in your stencil.
Personally, I rather choose to work with a stencil made of plastic.
As a designer of decorative motifs, it is important that I can repeat the same shapes. Since the plastic is dimensionally stable and easy to clean, this can be done.
I can also choose to use the same stencil (after I clean it) with a different color. Because I start with a clean stencil, the colors do not affect each other.
Because of the material, the cut out lines stay nice and flat on your textile.
I can think of three situations where a paper stencil is still more convenient than a stencil made of plastic.
1. If it's a rough sketch, an idea you're forming and you want to see how it might look;
2. When it is a one-time project and the stencil loses the added value of keeping it after that;
3. When the shapes you want in the template are very easy to cut.
