Johann Sebastian Bach (March 31 [O.S. March 21], 1685 – July 28, 1750) was a German composer and musician of the late Baroque period. He is celebrated for his orchestral works, including the Brandenburg Concertos; instrumental pieces like the Cello Suites; keyboard masterpieces such as the Goldberg Variations and The Well-Tempered Clavier; organ compositions like the Schubler Chorales and Toccata and Fugue in D minor; and vocal works such as the St. Matthew Passion and the Mass in B minor. Since the Bach revival in the 19th century, he has been widely recognized as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music.
