Remote Desktop Not Working? Fix RDS Grace Period | Windows Server 2012 R2

In this video, I will show you how to fix the Remote Desktop Services (RDS) licensing grace period issue on Windows Server 2012 R2.
When working with RDS in a lab environment, you may encounter a problem where the licensing grace period has expired. When this happens, the RDS server displays the following message:
“Remote Desktop licensing mode is not configured. Remote Desktop Services will stop working because this computer is past its licensing grace period. On the RD Connection Broker server, use Server Manager to specify the Remote Desktop licensing mode and the license server.”
When a client attempts to connect, you may also see this error:
“The remote session was disconnected because there are no Remote Desktop License Servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator.”
In this video, I will walk you through the steps to resolve this issue.
🛠️ Steps to Fix the Licensing Grace Period
Step 1:
Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
Step 2:
Type regedit and click OK to open the Registry Editor.
Step 3:
Navigate to the following registry path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE → SYSTEM → CurrentControlSet → Control → Terminal Server → RCM → GracePeriod
Step 4:
You will see a registry entry named L$RTMTIMEBOMB.
To delete this entry, you must first change permissions:
Right-click on GracePeriod and select Permissions
Click Add → Advanced → Find Now
Select your user account, then click OK
Grant Full Control and Read permissions
Click Apply, then OK
Step 5:
Go back to the GracePeriod key, select L$RTMTIMEBOMB, and delete it.
Click Yes to confirm the deletion.
Step 6:
Restart the server.
After restarting the server, the issue will be resolved, and a new grace period will be applied. You should see a message indicating that:
“Remote Desktop Services will stop working in 119 days.”
This confirms that the licensing grace period has been successfully reset.
