What are the components of an air-to-air missile (AAM)? This video analyzes in detail each system that makes up an air-to-air guided missile.
First, the propulsion system is discussed, which can be of two types: rocket or jet.
Rocket motors can be solid-fueled for medium- to short-range missiles or liquid-fueled for long-range missiles. To further increase a missile's range, a jet propulsion system using ramjet or scramjet engines is being implemented.
The second system analyzed is the control system, which can be of three types: aerodynamic control, using canards; thrust-vector control, which changes the direction of thrust using movable nozzles; or control using fixed jets positioned around the missile's body.
The system that provides input to the control system is the guidance system. Guidance can be classified into four categories: preset, command, beam-rider, and homing.
Homing is the most accurate system and can be of three types: passive (typical of heat-seeking missiles); semi-active, in which the aircraft acts as an illuminator to direct the missile toward the target; or active, in which the missile is completely autonomous and can both detect and track the target.
To accomplish this, a seeker is positioned at the front of the missile.
The purpose of a missile is to inflict as much damage as possible on an enemy aircraft. This function is achieved by the combination of the fuse and the warhead. The fuse will trigger the missile at a specific time or upon the occurrence of an event, which will cause the warhead to explode, causing as much damage as possible to the enemy aircraft.
