Here is a chemical tube. Inside this tube there is molten NaCl. 2 graphite electrodes are dipped into it. Furthermore, these two electrodes are connected by a cable. It turns out that electric current does not flow through the cable as it does in a Volta cell, there is no chemical reaction around the electrodes.
Now, the cable is connected to the battery. The positive pole of the battery is on the left, while the negative pole of the battery is on the right. Not long after, gas bubbles are seen moving towards the surface of the melt on the left electrode. While on the right electrode, a layer of metal is seen getting thicker. This means that a chemical reaction is taking place on both electrodes.
Because without a battery there is no chemical reaction, this process does not occur spontaneously. In electrochemistry, this cell is known as an electrolysis cell.
