Feline Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) is a genetic and hereditary disease caused by an alteration in a specific gene. PKD has an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern, meaning that a cat carrying the altered gene can transmit the disease to its offspring.
The main characteristic of PKD is the formation of cysts in the kidneys, small fluid-filled structures that can progressively increase in size throughout life, compromising kidney function as they develop.
One of the biggest challenges with PKD is that many cats can remain asymptomatic for years. The animal may appear completely healthy, even though it carries the disease. Therefore, the only way to identify if a cat has PKD is through specific tests, such as renal ultrasound performed by a qualified professional or genetic testing.
The main form of prevention is responsible breeding, avoiding the use of cats diagnosed as positive for PKD for reproduction. In this way, we reduce the transmission of the genetic alteration to future generations.
The life expectancy of a cat with PKD can vary considerably. Some animals may develop more severe kidney disease and show changes at a young age, while others may remain stable for many years. This progression depends on several factors, such as the number of cysts present in the kidneys, the growth rate of these structures, and their impact on kidney function.
Therefore, a cat that tests positive for PKD may have a shorter lifespan in some cases, but can also live for many years, even exceeding ten years of age, especially when receiving proper monitoring and preventative care.
