In about 5 billion years, the Sun will run out of hydrogen and swell into a red giant, engulfing nearby planets like Mercury and Venus—and possibly Earth.
After shedding its outer layers, it will leave behind a hot, dense core called a white dwarf. This will slowly cool over billions of years, marking the end of the Sun's life.
