In Polish, a modal verb is followed by an infinitive.
If you and I want something in Polish, we use the verb chcieć (to want).
If we can or are able to do something in Polish, we need two verbs: umieć (to be able) and móc (to be able).
If you owe something in Polish, you need the following verbs:
musieć -- to be indebted
powinien mieć -- to need
musieć -- you are obliged to do something, you owe it very much
Musisz mieć ze sobą paszport i ubezpieczenie -- You must have your passport and insurance with you.
powinien -- a softer expression: You owe something, but you are not obliged, it's not critical.
Ona powinna odrobić lekcje. -- She should do her homework (but she hasn't done it yet).
If we put a verb after the verb mieć (to have), we get the idea that we need to do something:
Mam iść do domu. -- I need to go home.
If we know something in Polish, we need the following verbs:
znać -- to know someone / something wiedzieć -- to know about someone / something
