Stephen Welfare, Deputy Chief Executive of NHS Midlands and East, explains that LETCs are councils to help create an system of education and training that is locally led.

LETC stands for local education and training council.

LETCs are unique to the West Midlands, where it was decided that to have five councils informing the West Midlands LETB was a way of ensuring more local voices could be heard.

The five West Midlands LETCs are:

Arden LETC
Birmingham LETC
Black Country LETC
Staffordshire LETC
West Mercia LETC

The chair of each LETC, who is locally elected, also sits on the West Midlands LETB.

The precise role of a LETC is still being established. It is expected that local health providers will sit on LETCs and that there will be cross sector representation.
