What a productive week! In this video I'll show you how I improved the color pushing effect by changing it from a distortion shader, to instead be a window to the colored world using a raytracing technique! This was a little tricky to implement in Unity, mostly because of all the edge cases and issues with the way I hide elements in the colored world, but in the end I think it's a really nice result.

If you're interested in the nerdy details, here's an article with all the math behind the effect: https://viclw17.github.io/2018/07/16/...

This new effect looks way better in my opinion, and I've also added a layer of particles over the effect using Unity's VFX Graph, which allows you to run massive particle simulations on the GPU. I've been experimenting with VFX Graph a lot lately, and I'm really starting to get a feel for it. I've updated a number of effects to use it and take advantage of the CPU savings, offloading the heavy lifting to the GPU.

After finishing the new color pushing effect, I was inspired to create a new puzzle type for the game, where you unlock hidden objects using perspective. This is an idea that was originally inspired by Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, one of my favourite games and a big inspiration for Farewell North, and a mechanic that I had long wanted to find a way to fit into the game. I think I've put a unique twist on the mechanic however, and tied it into the coloring systems by having the player color in the hidden object.

I hope you enjoy the video, and please leave your thoughts down below. Don't forget to like, subscribe and of course, wishlist the game on Steam!

Farewell North is my personal passion project, an open world adventure game about restoring color to a dark and desolate archipelago where all color and life has left. You play as a collie working alongside your human companion to explore, solve puzzles, evade monsters, and restore color to the islands.
