ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE discovered 100 NEW GALAXIES😱
Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing astronomy, uncovering new clues about galactic evolution through the analysis of spectroscopic data. Recently, a deep neural network was used to examine data collected over a decade ago by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III, identifying more than a hundred new galaxies containing neutral carbon absorbers. These absorbers, crucial to understanding galaxy evolution, are extremely difficult to detect with traditional methods. Carbon is a key indicator of a phase of rapid galactic evolution, and its presence suggests that the galaxy produced elements heavier than hydrogen and helium, possible precursors to structures similar to the Milky Way disk. However, the limited number of known absorbers required the use of 5 million fictional spectra to train the neural network. AI, with its ability to analyze large amounts of data and detect subtle patterns, allowed the discovery of these new absorbers dating back approximately 10.8 billion years. This advancement not only expands our understanding of galactic evolution, but also demonstrates the importance of AI in analyzing large astronomical datasets, opening up new possibilities for future scientific discoveries.
