Make a Planet in Photoshop

1. Create a simple black (#111111) "Background" layer
2. Create a Cloud layer with Filter/ Render/ Clouds (foreground color: #000000, background color: #aaaaaa;)
3. Set the fill at cloud layer 30%
4. Create a new layer to make "Stars": set color black (#000000) and add noise amount 10%
5. After that you have to interspace the "Stars" - Image/ Adjustment/ Levels set numbers to (80) (0,50) (105)
6. Set the "Stars" layer blending mode to "lighten"
7. Creat a new "Color" layer - paint spots with paintbrush tool and mix them with "Gaussian blur"
8. Set the "Color" layer blending mode to "Overlay"
9. Now your background is done
10. Draw a circle shape with "Ellipse tool", this is the "Base" of the planet
11. Create a new "Texture" layer to texturize the planet.
12. I usually use, whitewater, cracked soil, stone or someting grounged texture for this step. ( You can download for free http://www.cgtextures.com/)
13. Color this texture as you want like step 7. and set blending mode to "Overlay"
14. When your texture is fine create clipping mask on planet texture layer to the base circle shape
15. Make the planet to sphere - Click on planet base layer and selection it with Magic Wand tool, after selection click on textrue layer and spherize the base with Filter / Disort / Spherize - set amount 100%
16. Now your circle shape seems like a real planet :)
17. You have to shade the planet
18. Creat new "dark side" layer to shade the planet. Draw spots on the dark side with paint brush (#000000) and blur it. Set blending mode "overlay"
19. Creat new "light side" layer to highligt the planet lighter side. Draw spots on the dark side with paint brush (#ffffff) and blur it. Set blending mode "overlay"
20. On Planet Base layer set Blending options / drop shadow (Distance 0) (Size 10) color (#00ccff) blending mode "normal"

These method just a basic of the drawing process. Be creative and repeat effects as you want on different steps. And use your senses. Good luck!
