Greetings from Indonesia Learning!!!
What is Linux? What is openSUSE Leap?
This video provides an installation guide and review of openSUSE Leap 15.3.
openSUSE Leap 15.3 was released in early June 2021. openSUSE is a Linux distribution with a long history. SUSE Linux itself was launched in early 1994 and is one of the Linux distributions known for its rock-solid stability. SUSE Linux has now evolved into SUSE Linux Enterprise, or SLE for short, and is the commercial edition of SUSE Linux. openSUSE itself was launched in 2005 and is the community-driven version of SUSE Linux Enterprise.
openSUSE offers two major releases: openSUSE Leap and openSUSE Tumbleweed. openSUSE Leap shares the same code base as SUSE Linux Enterprise. Starting with version 15.3, openSUSE Leap has adopted the exact same binary packages as SUSE Linux Enterprise. In other words, when we use openSUSE Leap, we're actually using an enterprise-grade operating system. Therefore, openSUSE Leap is suitable for both server and desktop use. Furthermore, the migration process from openSUSE Leap to SUSE Linux Enterprise is quite easy.
Unlike openSUSE Leap, which focuses on enterprise-level stability and is ideal for server use, openSUSE Tumbleweed is a rolling release edition of openSUSE and is suitable for desktop use. Despite being a rolling release edition, openSUSE Tumbleweed's stability is quite reliable. Coincidentally, we also currently use openSUSE Tumbleweed as our daily driver for producing educational videos on the Indonesia Belajar channel.
For those of you who are unsure whether to choose between openSUSE Leap and openSUSE Tumbleweed, we highly recommend starting with openSUSE Leap first. If you ever decide to migrate from openSUSE Leap to openSUSE Tumbleweed, this is entirely possible, and the process is relatively easy. We also plan to create a separate video guide for migrating from openSUSE Leap to openSUSE Tumbleweed.
The software installation process on openSUSE Linux will be facilitated by YaST, or Yet Another Setup Tool. In addition to software installation, YaST is also used to facilitate various system administration processes on openSUSE.
Another interesting thing about openSUSE is its vibrant community. In Indonesia, there is a very active openSUSE Indonesia community.
