Dr. Jennifer Franklin was the guest in an episode of the IBS Freedom Podcast. Join Amy, Dr. DiNezza, and Dr. Franklin as they discuss the importance of nervous system regulation when you have IBS or gut issues.
In this episode Dr. Franklin talks about the role of the nervous system in generating, perpetuating, and exacerbating gut symptoms associated with IBS and other digestive problems. You will learn a bit about Polyvagal Theory, the concept of the Window of Tolerance, and Nervous System Regulation. Dr. Franklin highly emphasizes the need to discover the "how" and "what is" of your experiences.

About me ⤵️
I'm Dr. Jennifer Franklin, a somatically-oriented, mindfulness-based psychologist offering therapy, teletherapy, and consultation with a specialization in healing functional medical problems – especially brain-gut disorders. I focus on healing "medically unexplained" physiological problems in conjunction with addressing symptoms of anxiety, panic, interpersonal relationships, attachment, and trauma. I have experience working closely with leading physicians and researchers at one of the country's premier medical centers for treating brain-gut disorders, after having healed and recovered from IBS myself.
About brain-gut disorders ⤵️
Brain-gut disorders, also known as functional gastrointestinal problems, refers to a variety of digestive problems that are "medically unexplained." The most common brain-gut disorder is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), but there are other lesser-known diagnoses like functional dyspepsia, cyclic vomiting, regurgitation, reflux, and others. Brain-gut digestive problems are not purely physiological in nature; they are generated, perpetuated, and/or exacerbated by the interactivity between the brain and gut.
The complexity of your gut makes healing from IBS and other brain-gut disorders a challenging, intricate process. While there are medications and diets to manage or ameliorate certain symptoms, physicians are typically unable to fix or cure brain-gut digestive problems because they are unable to determine a clear physiological cause. Your psychology and your nervous system have a lot to do with it.
When I started this work, the medical community insisted that stress has nothing to do with digestive problems. Today, it is well-accepted that there is a relationship between stress, trauma, and digestive symptoms. Reducing stress by avoiding stress is not a realistic approach. I have a better one: Regulate your nervous system and increase your capacity for living in the high-stress, fast-paced world in which we live.
