The multi-party democratic regime we now live with in Türkiye is actually the product of a 23-year struggle and search. From the founding of the Republic until 1946, there were three attempts to transition from a single party to a multi-party system. The first of these was in 1924. The Progressive Republican Party opposed the Republican People's Party, which had been ruling the country. However, this period, during which a new republic was being built in pain, did not allow for the survival of a dissenting voice. The Progressive Republican Party was shut down six months later. Some of its leaders were imprisoned. Some were sentenced to death row in the Atatürk assassination case.

The second attempt was made six months later, in 1930, with the Free Party. But the Free Party only lasted 97 days.

Finally, after another 16 years, the Democrat Party arrived in 1946, and the single-party regime became history for Türkiye, never to return.

We'll begin our story in 1930, the second attempt at a multi-party regime in the history of the Republic. We'll search for traces of the Democrat Party, which came to power in 1950, in the turmoil of the 1930s...
