The 2018 Chevrolet Cruze adds a new type of powertrain to its lineup that’s recently gotten a number of other automakers into trouble. The new Cruze is available in both sedan and hatchback form with a 1.6-liter turbodiesel and a new 9-speed automatic transmission that produce 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque. Our reviewer finds the diesel more highway friendly and efficient than last year’s gas Cruze, but worries about the new stop/start system’s impact on engine lifespan.
Our reviewer appreciates that the 2018 Cruze supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which allowed him to use the voice-recognition system built into his smartphone rather than Chevrolet’s, which he calls slow and less effective. He also wishes auto climate control was available with the diesel, but that’s one of a few creature comforts that can be had only in Premier trims, which require the gas engine. He says the Cruze falls short of competitors in both performance and features at standard MSRP.
