In this review, I'll tell you about a horrific abandoned building in Kaliningrad, namely the Rosenau Slaughterhouse, which later became the Kaliningrad Meat Processing Plant.

🐃On August 19, 1895, the grand complex of the city enterprise "Slaughterhouse and Stockyard" (Städtischer Schlacht- und Viehhof; later the Kaliningrad Meat Processing Plant) was commissioned. It was built in the village of Rosenau, located south of Königsberg and not within its city limits at the time. The choice of location was likely influenced by the fact that a paved road (Avaider Allee – now Alley of the Brave) intersected with the Eastern and Southern Railways.

🐃By the end of the 19th century, of all the Königsberg slaughterhouses, only the Altstadt slaughterhouse, located near the Drovyanoy Bridge (the bridge connecting Oktyabrskaya Street with Moskovsky Prospekt), remained operational. Public health concerns and the failure of this completely outdated structure, located in the city center, to meet modern technical requirements prompted Mayor Hoffmann to explore the possibility of constructing a new slaughterhouse. A number of specialists were commissioned to visit similar facilities in other cities. After discussing the information obtained from these visits and reviewing the proposed designs, the design of Construction Councilor Mühlbach, implemented on a 95,000 square meter site in Rosenau in 1893-1895, was accepted for implementation. The construction of the city slaughterhouse complex cost 3.25 million marks (according to other sources, 2.1 million marks).

🐃The complex, located just 3 km from the center of Königsberg, was surrounded by a perimeter fence, with the entrance and exit on the eastern side. In front of the gates was a square stretching from east to west. On the northern side were buildings shared by the slaughterhouse and the barn: a hotel, employees' housing, a water tower, stables, and a carriage house. On the southern side were the slaughterhouse itself and the barn.

🐃The slaughterhouse itself consisted of a huge, overhead-lit room, the so-called "unification hall," surrounded by pens for slaughtering cattle, calves, and pigs, a cold storage building for storing meat, and a giblet washing facility. A large building stood separately, housing a slaughterhouse for horses on one side and a slaughterhouse for sick cattle on the other; these areas were separated by a thick brick wall. Worthy of note were the administrative building, where veterinary meat testing was conducted, two office buildings, a restaurant, and, finally, a water tower, fed by pumped water from the fortress moat, which supplied the entire complex with water. The enterprise's operating schedule required two slaughters per week, each comprising 100 head of cattle, 400 head of sheep, and 400 head of pigs. In 1906, the slaughterhouse was expanded, and its productivity increased.

🐃After the war, the Königsberg slaughterhouse complex remained in operation. It became the basis for the Kaliningrad Meat-Canning Plant, an enterprise familiar to every Kaliningrader for many years, which flourished, perhaps, until the new century. Liquidated in 2018.
