Sometimes we need a little helper, and this little tool can notify you in the event of some pending storage failure.

Commands:
pkg install smartmontools

portmaster /usr/ports/sysutils/smartmontools

cd /usr/ports/sysutils/smartmontools
make install clean

camcontrol devlist

smartctl -i /dev/ada0

camcontrol --test short /deb/ada1

cd /usr/local/etc

cp smartd.conf.sample smartd.conf

edit smartd.conf
(delete DEVICESCAN)
(add /dev/ada0)

sysrc smartd_enable="YES"

service smartd start

service smartd stop

man smartd
